Chucrée Chalée,

Chucrée, Chalée 1 and 2 (2021) are two small-format portraits of women by Hatice Pinarbaşi, adorned with scarves. This simple gesture, performed by some women and men, can be associated with both coquetry and concealment—the latter often motivated by a desire for modesty, a need for protection, or practical reasons. The scarf—whether a simple headscarf or an expensive silk fabric—thus has, as is often the case in the Kurdish artist’s work, multiple and sometimes contradictory interpretations: the accessory may draw the eye, or, on the contrary, attempt to shield itself from it. Depending on the fabric or its patterns, the headscarf reveals something about social class or geographic origin: a silk square stamped with the logo of major brands, or a cotton scarf worn by Kurdish mothers and grandmothers at the market or in the fields. The eyes of Chucrée, Chalée 1, and 2 shine like two-euro coins. The works seem to share the same financial anxieties and lucidity. Hatice Pinarbaşi dresses her paintings to give them character, identity, a story, and a soul. The artist often works in series because she likes the idea of creating a “family” or a “gang of friends” of paintings.” Ana Mendoza
